5 Tips to Survive Moving Home During Winter

While we all wanted to move during perfect weather, there are a lot of people who can’t avoid moving home during not favourable times, such as winter. Moving home is already stressful enough. Add snow to that, and things can be a lot tougher.

Just like moving on a rainy day, you will be faced with a lot of challenges when moving home during winter. So, read these helpful tips we have gathered so you can survive moving in winter.

1. Hire movers to help you

Moving during winter is not the best time to do it yourself. It is just very tricky for anyone who doesn’t have the experience to handle a move, especially when the weather is not favourable. You need to hire people who have experience, knowledge, and the right equipment to do the job. Leave it to professionals so you can have a safe and smooth relocation.

2. Pack your items properly

There is a big possibility of your items getting damped when moving in winter. So, you need to ensure that your items are well-packed and protected. Your cardboard boxes can get damped, so to provide protection, you should cover them with plastic. The same goes for other items that can’t be packed in boxes, like your mattresses and couch.

3. Make sure your utilities are set up and fully functioning

You don’t want to end up moving into your new home during winter without utility access. You will need electricity, heat and water upon your arrival. Make sure to the utilities in your new home is all set up and functioning. If the heat in your new house has been off for quite some time, you might want to book an appointment with a plumber and have your pipes checked to make sure they have not frozen.

It’s important to note that while you want to ensure utilities are turned on, you may want to hold off turning the heat on until all your belongings are all set inside your new home. With movers going in and out of your new home, you are going to waste the heat and result in a high utility bill.

4. Shovel and salt your driveway

Do your best to make the situation easier and safe for you and your movers. Shovel or blow off the walkways, driveway, and parking area of your moving truck. Also, consider salting your outdoor walkways so you and your movers can avoid slipping and falling. You don’t want any accidents to happen so keep the area safe as possible.

5. Protect the floors

Whether it is your old home’s floor or your new home, you don’t want to cause any damage to it. Damage floors or carpets only means additional expenses. Water and salt can cause irreversible damage to hardwood floors. Wet footwear can leave stains on your carpet that is difficult to get rid of. Make sure to cover your floor with a tarp or flattened cardboard boxes to provide protection. Place a heavy-duty rug at the entrance of your house for people to wipe off their shoes before entering inside.

It’s true that moving in winter is very challenging but with preparation and planning, you can definitely survive the ordeal. Another way to make moving in winter bearable is when you have some warm beverage for you and your movers. If you haven’t hired movers yet, now is the time to find trusted movers to help you out.
