Home Improvements to Make Before You Move In

Home improvement in your newly purchased home is probably the last thing in your mind when you’re occupied with other pre-moving tasks in your checklist such as decluttering, packing and looking for the best moving company in NZ. However, experts suggest that upgrading your new home is best tackled before you move. An empty house means no furniture will be in danger while all the renovation is being done. You and your family will not be exposed to hazardous elements such as dust from the renovation, paint odours, etc.

It can be tempting to move in right away but consider taking care of some home improvements first and you will feel more comfortable and settled in your new home. Here are some of the home improvements you may want to tackle before your chosen home mover delivers your stuff.

External locks

You and your family’s safety is essential at all times so before moving into your new home, make sure to call a locksmith and have all the locks changed, especially external locks. Even if you think the previous owner is trustworthy, you never know who has a spare key to your newly purchased home.

Be sure to include garage door locks and other sheds or buildings that are part of your new property.

All of your furniture will have to be moved out when during floor upgrades, so it is always advisable to do this before you move in. After all, who would want to move their furniture twice? It’s too much of a hassle, and it will keep the cost down of your floor upgrades if flooring company won’t have to deal with an added task of moving your furniture.

Just like floor upgrades, painting is much easier done when there’s no furniture to move or cover. So whether you do the painting yourself or hire a professional to do the job, consider having this task done a few days before your move-in day. It can save you some time, and save you money if you are hiring someone since they only have to focus on the painting job, rather than worrying about your stuff inside your house and moving it away from the working area to protect it from any spills.

Popcorn ceilings and walls

Popcorn ceilings and walls are common in houses built prior to the 1990s. This is no longer a thing now and you would most likely want to get rid of it if you both a house with this kind of feature. Getting rid of popcorn ceilings or walls can be simple, but also very messy, so it is best done before you move in. It is important to remember that this kind of ceilings and walls contain asbestos and other irritants, so it’s best you have this removed.

Batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors

This is easily neglected by most people before moving into a new home. But it is very important that you ensure smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors, and other alarms are functioning well. So before you move in, replace your alarm’s old batteries with fresh ones.

If you have kids or pets, then you have more things to do to make your new home safe for them. You would be lucky if the previous homeowner has children or pet because you won’t be needing that much adjustments. But if not, making necessary adjustments to your new home for your kids and pets is essential and is best done before you move in. You don’t want your kids or pets running around your house, especially on moving day, with all the hazards hanging around.

Deep cleaning

It is much easier to clean an empty house. You will see better which part of your new house needs a deep cleaning. So before your home movers deliver your stuff, make sure you have scrubbed down the floors, bathrooms and kitchens. Don’t forget to include cabinets and drawers too. A fresh and clean home will make you and your family live healthily.

Moving is composed of a lot of arduous tasks and which can result in a lot of complications and stress. By doing home improvements prior to you moving in, you save yourself some time and money and avoid extending stress when you and your family are already trying to settle in.

If you want to avoid more complications and stress, hiring a moving company can surely make a difference. And if you want to do so, Wise Move is where you can easily find trusted moving companies and home movers in NZ.

They helped us with a house move from Hamilton to Christchurch. On the day of the move the truck arrived well on time and everything was loaded and good to go in pretty much one hour! Matt was a great help and really friendly to deal with. As agreed on, the truck arrived two days later in Christchurch and unloading was done quick and efficiently! Just remember that, as reflected on their price, you can’t expect everything to come out without any scratch if you don't wrap it yourself. We made sure everything was good to go on the day of move and wrapped our more valuable stuff in bubble wrap, plastic wrap or in sturdy boxes. That worked great for us and made their job a lot easier I imagine.

Epic packing! Strong, fast movers and so polite and sweet. Only 2 items with tiny damage. But muddy crap conditions and I'm insured excess so not worth it, as I say nominal. For the price chur chur!!! I feel blessed that's all that happened to be honest! Paid for 3 both ways, 3 showed for pickup, 2 for delivery, don't refund, just buy the two a box. I thought delivery 3 hours?? Maybe?? Done in 1.5. So pleased. Thank you team, thank you, thank you. Moving from Whangarei Heads to Orks is hell stressful, your people did the job above my expectations and I am very very grateful. Highly recommend!!

Pawan and his team were excellent! We moved across the country, and despite this long distance we miraculously had no breakage of delicate kitchen items, and only a few minor scuffs and scrapes (to be expected) on a few tricky furniture items. They were great with communication, and arrived promptly with a load in and load out well faster than we expected. They were also very understanding and helpful when we had a lot more gear than we’d initially planned, with very reasonable pricing given we had to take extra space, and also scheduling flexibly for us so that we could be there at both ends of the trip. Payment was easy - they just gave us the bank details after the move was complete and were very easy to work with. Super lovely guys too - very friendly and reassuring which is exactly what you want on a high pressured and stressful moving day. Overall would highly recommend and will definitely be giving them a call again next time we have gear to move. Can’t thank them enough!
