Create a plan in advance

Being the only one to do all the tasks that there is when moving, you have to give yourself ample time to do all that you have to do. Generally, 2 to 3 months is a good amount of time for you to find a moving company to hire, declutter, clean, pack, prepare some paperwork for your kid’s school transfer.

Creating a checklist or planner is helpful. List the things you need to do and put a timeline of when this needs to be done.

Declutter before packing

Getting rid of unnecessary things will help you move easier and faster. The fewer things you have, the less time you need to spend packing. You can also save space in the moving truck. And if hiring a mover, you can minimize the labour cost because they only have few things to move.

So, before you start packing, get rid of items you no longer use or you won’t be needing in your new home. You can give it to friends or family or donate to charities. And if you’re looking for additional funds for your move, you can organize a garage sale and sell items that are still in good condition. You can also post them on marketplaces like Trade Me.

Prepare your kids

The idea of moving to a new home can be daunting, much more to kids. That’s why it is very important that you prepare them for the big change. Inform them in advance and have a conversation on how they feel about the move and address their concerns. It’s understandable that they will be hesitant and fearful about the upcoming move, so help them understand why you have to do such thing and what are the benefits you will have for doing so.

Get your kids involved

Getting your kids involved in the moving process will give them a sense of control over the change that’s about to happen. So, let them help you with your moving tasks. This will also take away the burden of having to do all moving tasks alone.

You can ask older kids to help out with cleaning and packing. For your younger kids, you can give them tasks like sorting their toys and books and separate those they no longer wanted and encourage them in donating those to charities.

Keep a positive attitude

Your kids will look up to you for support during the big change they are about to experience. So, whatever the reason for your move, avoid showing any negative attitude about it. This will make your children feel secure and trust that everything is going to be alright.

Hire home movers

This might be the most effective way to reduce stress when moving as a single parent, hire home movers. As a single parent moving to a new home, you do not only worry about your belongings being moved but you and your kid’s well-being too. When you have professionals to handle the relocation of your items, you’ll have more time to spend with your kids to make sure that they have a smooth transition to your new home. They helped us with a house move from Hamilton to Christchurch. On the day of the move the truck arrived well on time and everything was loaded and good to go in pretty much one hour! Matt was a great help and really friendly to deal with. As agreed on, the truck arrived two days later in Christchurch and unloading was done quick and efficiently! Just remember that, as reflected on their price, you can’t expect everything to come out without any scratch if you don't wrap it yourself. We made sure everything was good to go on the day of move and wrapped our more valuable stuff in bubble wrap, plastic wrap or in sturdy boxes. That worked great for us and made their job a lot easier I imagine.

Epic packing! Strong, fast movers and so polite and sweet. Only 2 items with tiny damage. But muddy crap conditions and I'm insured excess so not worth it, as I say nominal. For the price chur chur!!! I feel blessed that's all that happened to be honest! Paid for 3 both ways, 3 showed for pickup, 2 for delivery, don't refund, just buy the two a box. I thought delivery 3 hours?? Maybe?? Done in 1.5. So pleased. Thank you team, thank you, thank you. Moving from Whangarei Heads to Orks is hell stressful, your people did the job above my expectations and I am very very grateful. Highly recommend!!

Pawan and his team were excellent! We moved across the country, and despite this long distance we miraculously had no breakage of delicate kitchen items, and only a few minor scuffs and scrapes (to be expected) on a few tricky furniture items. They were great with communication, and arrived promptly with a load in and load out well faster than we expected. They were also very understanding and helpful when we had a lot more gear than we’d initially planned, with very reasonable pricing given we had to take extra space, and also scheduling flexibly for us so that we could be there at both ends of the trip. Payment was easy - they just gave us the bank details after the move was complete and were very easy to work with. Super lovely guys too - very friendly and reassuring which is exactly what you want on a high pressured and stressful moving day. Overall would highly recommend and will definitely be giving them a call again next time we have gear to move. Can’t thank them enough!
