What are you moving?

After finalising your decision to move to a new home, you will have a whole lot of things that you need to do and it is important that you create a plan on how to tackle all of these. One of the most difficult things that you will have to do when you are about to move is packing all of your belongings. Unless you are willing to pay a moving company for packing services (which is, by the way, an additional charge), then you will have to take care of the packing yourself.

Packing is a time-consuming process, and therefore you shouldn’t let procrastination get in the way of your timeline. You don’t want to still be packing your belongings while your hired movers are already on your doorsteps.

But sometimes, not knowing how to get started can be a problem. When packing, it is essential that you know what to pack first. It is not logical to pack things that you still have to use on your remaining days in the home you will be moving out of soon. To help you out, we’ve put up a guide so you can get started packing your belongings.

What to do first before packing?

Before getting started with the packing process, there are things that you need to do first so you can keep the process organized and efficient.

Declutter

You can’t just pack everything in your home to bring it with you on your move. It will be time-consuming, costly and tiresome. So it’s practical to just move the things that you need to. Go through each room in your house and identify those you wanted to bring to your new home—separate those items you no longer need.

You will be surprised as to how many items you have been keeping that no longer serve a purpose to you. It’s now time to get rid of all of these. It doesn’t mean, though that they need to end up in a landfill. You can donate those items to local charities, or you can host a garage sale and make money out of them.

Gather your packing materials

So you can properly and securely pack your belongings, you need to get all your packing materials ready. Here are the materials you will need:

It’s now time to pack

Let’s now get down to the business of packing.

Items in storage

The items you have in storage should be the first items you pack. Most of them are already in a box or storage unit. Also, you’re most likely not going to use any of these items on the last days of your stay in your old home. So go through your belongings stored in your garage, attic or shed. Make sure to get rid of the items you don’t want to bring to your new home.

Out-of-season clothes

Packing your out-of-season clothes is also easier because, most probably, you have already packed these in a box in your closet. Plus, you may have also got rid of several of those before you stored them in a box.

China and other rarely used dishes

Most likely than not, you have a lot of items at home you rarely use. A good example of these is fine china and other rarely used dishes. You won’t be hosting fancy parties during preparation for your move, so it’s only logical you pack this early on. Plus, you will need to take extra care packing these items so it will take more time so better to pack this sooner.

Decorative pieces

Artworks and any decorative pieces are tricky to pack but it’s good to start packing this as they don’t serve an essential function in your home while you are packing aside from aesthetics. These items can also be easily forgotten, so packing them early can help you ensure you don’t forget any of your decorative pieces.

Knick-Knacks

There are small things that are special to us even how small it is, You probably have all of these knick-knacks lying around your home. Before getting overwhelmed with all the chaos there is when moving, you better have all your knick-knacks boxed up in advance.

Extra towels and linens

It is not ideal to be changing sheets or using plenty of towels when you’re nearing moving day. So pack up any extra towels and linens you have and plan on just washing the same few towels so you don’t overload your laundry basket before moving out.

Books

It’s a good idea to donate your books so you can reduce the number of items you have to move. But if you are left with still a good amount of books, it’s good to have them packed early on. You can just leave a few ones that you can read during your downtime.

Now that you know where to begin, we hope you can get started with your packing and be all set before your movers arrived. As previously mentioned, packing can be time-consuming so better get started as early as you can.
