The Best Places to Buy Second Hand Furniture in New Zealand

Whether you love saving money, are sustainability conscious, or just love a bargain, shopping from second-hand furniture stores is a great way to make your home look unique and keep your wallet happy.

We’ve come up with a list of the best places to buy second-hand furniture in New Zealand. Add these stores to your must-visit list for your next nationwide road trip.

North Island

French & Sons, Bulls

You can’t miss the Bulls. The town itself might be small, but the number of bull sculptures dotted around town makes it well worth a look. Another shop that has made its mark on Bull is French & Sons. This antique store imports all its furniture from France and is one of the best places to buy second-hand furniture in New Zealand. This shop is a treasure trove of beautiful and sturdy wooden tables, shelving units and other large pieces of furniture.

From kitchen islands to nineteenth-century tables and chairs, if you like the rustic, French country or farmhouse style, make sure you add French & Sons to your list. It’s not the most affordable second-hand store on our list, but we guarantee your pieces will be one of a kind in New Zealand.

Junk & Disorderly, Auckland

As the name suggests, you’ll find all sorts of items at Junk & Disorderly. The shop is well laid out and packed to the brim with furniture items, from couches and chairs to side tables, shelving units and desks. Their online shop sells smaller items, decor and household objects.

So Vintage, Hastings

Owned by a French-New Zealand couple, So Vintage stocks industrial furniture, French and European antiques, and vintage lighting and decor. If you’re looking for large, rustic and worn-in furniture to make an impact make sure you visit their store. From wooden chair pews to extensive cabinetry, their pieces will add the perfect element of rustic charm to your home.

Antique Alley, Auckland

The best way to describe Antique Alley is absolutely stuffed. There’s a category for almost everything in this vintage and antique op shop, but their unique furniture collection is impressive. From retro drawers to can coffee tables and victorian hall tables, each piece is unique, and you guarantee you won’t find another item like it in the country. What’s more, their prices are reasonable for such good quality stock.

Vintage Industries, New Plymouth

Where else can you buy vintage decor, rugs, tables and chairs and taxidermy than Vintage Industries in New Plymouth? Their unique items are all sourced from Europe, which means you’ll get high-quality furniture that no one else in the country has. Their collection of tribal hand-woven colourful rugs is full of unique, authentic traditional rugs you won’t find anywhere else.

The Collective, Auckland

The Collective is a second-hand store that also upcycles furniture, giving it a new lease of life and preventing more furniture from reaching landfills. They stock everything from vintage, eclectic and timeless furniture.

South Island

Shingle Creek Collectables, Alexandra

If you’re looking for vintage anything, Shingle Creek Collectables should be high on your list. Located on a country road, Shingle Creek Collectables is a treasure trove of items that are affordable and perfect for an upcycling project. They specialise in unique pieces, from wooden sewing desks to vintage barstools, often sourced from local farms.

Electric Antique Centre, Nelson

This well-stocked Nelson store has a wide range of second-hand furniture, including retro and mid-century pieces sourced straight from the United States. If you’re looking for the best second-hand furniture stores to visit, Electric Antique Centre should be high on your list. Here you’ll find quality wooden furniture like sideboards, dining tables, or wooden footed dining chairs.  From bright red kitschy dining chairs to mid-century art-inspired pieces, they specialise in Art Deco, Retro and Mid Century stock.

Mr Mod, Christchurch

Love retro? Mr Mod is Christchurch’s home for mid-century second-hand furniture in good condition. Here you’ll find well looked after and restored pieces from Scandinavia and the United States. While the prices are much steeper than in some second-hand stores, each piece is in fantastic condition and unique, making it worth the investment. Check them out for their impressive collection of storage options, coffee tables and retro seating.

Online stores

Facebook Marketplace

We can’t offer you a list of the best places to look for second-hand furniture in New Zealand without mentioning Facebook Marketplace. Unlike TradeMe, you don’t have to bid on items which means if you get in quick, you can often find furniture locally for an absolute bargain. Handily, Facebook Marketplace also lets you save and search items into categories and listing and buying things via the platform is entirely free!

Affordable second-hand stores

Sometimes shopping second-hand is more about how much is in your bank account than finding unique and beautifully restored pieces. However, shopping at thrift stores doesn’t mean you’re missing out. Make sure to head to your local thrift shop regularly. You can look over new stock as soon as it comes in. Also, be aware of your local store opening hours. Many thrift stores aren’t open on Sundays.

City Mission - There are city mission stores around the country, each one run as individual shops. Many city mission stores stock a good selection of household furniture. Proceeds go towards City Mission in your town or city.

Salvation Army Family Store - There are Salvation Army Family Stores in almost every small town and large city in New Zealand. They are known for stocking a large quantity of high-quality furniture. Search their website for your local store here.

Mary Potter Hospice - Mary Potter Hospice is a Wellington charity that provides palliative care to people in the Wellington, Porirua and Kāpiti regions. Their stores stock good quality furniture, and all proceeds go towards charity. Find a store near you here.
