If you’re looking to kit out your first flat or want a standout vintage piece to decorate your home, Tāmaki Makaurau is packed with second-hand furniture stores to score affordable, character-filled furniture at a whole range of price points.
Auckland's second-hand scene is as diverse as the city itself. You’ll find everything from budget basics to retro gems tucked away in charity shops, antique stores, and warehouse-style outlets.
Whether you’re after functionality, flair, or a bit of both, we’ve rounded up some of the best spots to browse for pre-loved treasures across the Auckland region. Our guide will take you from the inner suburbs to the outer edges of the city and everywhere in between.
Auckland is a sprawling metropolis with few public transport options. Its sheer size can make furniture shopping feel like a bit of a mission than in other New Zealand cities.
One way to get around this is to pick a cluster of neighbouring suburbs to visit each weekend and stick to that area. While this may narrow your choice, regularly visiting the same stores gives you more of a chance to pick up new pieces as they come in.
If you’re in the central suburbs (Grey Lynn, Kingsland, Mount Eden etc), you’ll find a cluster of retro and vintage shops that attract design lovers, students, and renters alike. Good pieces tend to move quickly, so if you spot something you like, don’t wait.
For bigger bargains or a more relaxed browsing experience, head out to New Lynn, Pakuranga, or even further south or west. Larger stores in these suburbs often have warehouse space, meaning more variety and less competition.
The general rule of second-hand furniture shopping in Auckland is the more affordable the store, the more often you should visit.
Good quality, cheap furniture moves quickly. Try and mix up the time of day that you’re browsing too. If you can, pop into these shops on your lunch break during the week or early on during the weekend, as you’ll have a better chance of scoring a bargain.
You’ll find around twenty Salvation Army stores around Auckland, located from Torbay to Manurewa and everywhere in between—each with its own opening hours. The Salvation Army Family Stores are a reliable go-to for second-hand furniture at budget prices. Plus, you can pick up kitchen items, clothes and other household goods. Their stock generally changes regularly, and proceeds support community programmes, so you can furnish your home and give back while you’re at it. What’s more, if you have furniture to give away, the Salvation Army offer a free collection service.

One of the best things about Glenfield Furniture New & Used is their lack of online presence. While this store doesn’t have a website, you’ll find a treasure trove of quality second-hand pieces to explore in-store. If you like hunting for a good quality bargain, make sure you check them out. You’ll find everything from retro to vintage furniture to unearth and modern second-hand pieces mixed in with new stuff.
Prices vary from as low as NZ$95 for a restored set of painted drawers to retro furniture from the 50s-90s for around NZ$1,000. What’s more—they’re open seven days a week with late nights on Fridays.
If you like a well-organised, curated second-hand store, then the Royal Oak Traders is not for you. Described as a ‘shop you’re scared to breathe in for fear of knocking something over’ this second-hand store is for the treasure hunters. They stock a wide range of furniture and household items at cheap prices. Best of all, the store is absolutely stacked with goodies from floor to ceiling.

The good folks at Junk & Disorderly (more on them below) are responsible for bringing flea markets back to Auckland. Once a common way to shop for second-hand furniture, today Facebook Marketplace and TradeMe have made them a dying breed.
Inspired by flea markets from around the world, Central Flea is a lively open-air market that celebrates Balmoral’s cultural diversity. It’s held on select Sundays throughout the year (summer and winter) and features a mix of vintage and antique dealers, local artists, designers, food trucks, and live music. No two markets are the same. You’ll find special exhibitors and events that change throughout the year, which makes each visit a new and exciting experience.
For those of you looking for something a bit more high-end, we’ve got you covered with a list of vintage, retro and antique stores in Auckland. You’ll find high-quality furniture that is well-curated and well-restored.
