A bicycle is more than just a means of transportation. Bikes help to provide physical and mental health benefits and are good for the environment too. Many people consider their bicycles a valuable possession. Many bikes range upwards of one or two thousand dollars. So, it's natural that most people want to keep their bikes protected during a big move.
The best way to protect your bike during a move is to pay for a moving service. However, if the cost isn't worth it or you simply want to move it yourself, our guide can help ensure your bike stays protected during the move.
Proper packaging is essential for keeping your bicycle protected during the move. Here are the packing materials that you will need:
1 large cardboard bike box
1 smaller cardboard box for disassembled parts
1 fork protector
4-wheel axle protectors
Bubble wrap or packing paper
Cable ties
Packing tape
You will most likely find all these packing materials at your local bike shop. You'll also need disassembling tools to take your bike apart too.
You'll need to disassemble your bike into smaller parts so that you can fit it properly into its cardboard box. Packing it properly will help protect the delicate mechanisms of your bike. Start by removing the following parts of your bike:
Pedals
Handlebars
Seat post and saddle
Racks and fenders
Front-wheel
Water holders
To perform this task, you will need to use your disassembling tools. Remember to clean your bike with a soft rag before disassembling it.
Disassembled parts should be secured separately so they won’t get lost during transit. Wrap the smaller disassembled parts with bubble wrap or packing paper and secure with a strip of tape. Place the wrapped parts inside a small box. If there is still empty space inside the box, fill it with more bubble wrap or packing paper. This will prevent the parts from moving around during transit. Secure the small box shut with packing tape and place it inside the cardboard bike box.
After disassembling the removable parts of your bicycle, ensure the remaining parts of your bike are well protected.
The rear derailleur is what shifts the bike chain around at the rear sprockets. This is a delicate part of your bike and can get damaged easily so it's important to ensure it is protected. Most derailleurs can be removed by loosening one bolt. Wrap the rear derailleur and the chain with bubble wrap and secure it with packing tape.
Protect the bike frame by sliding the foam protection tubes on and securing them with cable ties. This will prevent scratching to the metal of your bike frame. If you don't have foam tubes using bubble wrap or packing paper will also keep the frame protected. Be generous with your bubble wrap or packing paper to provide the best protection possible.
It is important to protect the handlebars as well as they are delicate too. It is easier to pack flat handlebars. Fit them on top of the top frame tube of the wheel. Use a generous amount of bubble wrap to provide enough cushion. Dropped handlebars are harder to secure. Try to place the bar under the top frame tube and partly inside the wheel. Then use bubble wrap to protect it.
Carefully place the bike inside your cardboard box and seal the box properly. Don’t forget to label the box “FRAGILE”.
