Moving house takes a lot of planning and preparation. Your to-do list is so full that sometimes it's easy to miss important steps along the way. Sure, there are obvious tasks you won't forget to do like decluttering, packing, cleaning and hiring a moving company to cross off, but other tasks can easily slip your mind. One important step that's easy to forget is informing your contacts of your upcoming move. From utility companies to your workplace and financial services, you'll need to inform the following contacts of your upcoming move.
When moving home, you need to make sure you redirect all your mail to your new address to avoid losing any mail. This can be easily done by going to the NZ Post website. You can do this at least a week before your moving day. If you forget to inform any service providers or contacts of your move, a redirect will ensure you still receive your mail.
It is important that you inform all your service providers about your home move before the actual moving day. You need to arrange a transfer of your utilities like water, electricity and gas before you move into your new home. You also need to call service providers for your telephone, cable, and internet as early as you can. Call your service providers at least a week before you move so that this task is ticked off and your utilities are ready to be switched over on the day you move.
You don’t want sensitive information about your finances falling into the wrong hands, so make sure that you contact your bank and credit card company about your impending relocation. Give them a call and see if you can have your address updated online. Many New Zealand banks now make this step really easy and will let you update your address online or via a banking app. Even better, switch your preferences to online statements rather than paper statements. This helps keep your personal financial information even safer.
Aside from your bank and credit card company, you also need to inform your insurance providers about your home move, especially your home insurance company. It is crucial that you have transferred your insurance to your new address.
You’ll need to let your employer know when you move to a new address. Even if your paychecks are directly paid to your bank account, you still need to make sure your pay stubs, tax forms and other important papers at work will have your new address. Inform your HR department of your new address a few days before your move.
In New Zealand, you can choose the general practice that you visit, so you won't need to switch Dr or healthcare providers unless you'll find it inconvenient to do so. However, you'll still need to update your address for their records. Pharmacies will often ask you for your current address before they allow you to pick up any prescriptions or medication. Update your information with your doctor so that you don't have any issues with proving you are who you say you are.
If you have kids, then you should contact their school and advise them about your move. If your children are changing schools, you will need to arrange for school records to be transferred to the new school before they arrive. Tackle this as early as you can so your kids can have a smooth transition. And as soon as you found a new school for your kids, arrange a school visit for your kids to meet the school principal and their soon-to-be teachers.
Of course, you don’t want your relatives and friends to miss out on this big and exciting news. You don’t want your friends and relatives to send birthday and holiday gifts to your previous address, do you?
It may take time to change your address and update everyone who needs to know, but taking care of it helps you avoid any issues that could arise before your moving day.
