IKEA is expected to open its first physical store in New Zealand on 4 December 2025. Construction is underway at Sylvia Park in Auckland. It will cover around 34,000 m² and bring the full IKEA shopping experience to Kiwi customers.
From day one, New Zealanders will be able to shop:
More than 7,500 home furnishing items will be available, along with 29 nationwide pick-up points and home delivery options.
IKEA is a global furniture store known for its affordable, stylish designs. It began in 1953 as a mail-order catalogue in Sweden. Today, IKEA operates 471 stores across 63 countries.
The brand produces affordable yet quality pieces perfect for all stages of life. They stock a wide range of products, and their products are often designed with small living spaces in mind. More New Zealanders live in apartments these days, and international brands like IKEA have lightweight, affordable furniture perfect for your first flat or small apartment.
From bed frames with underbed storage solutions to adjustable desks, shoe cupboards, lighting and home decor, you’ll find a range of well-priced items created for everyday life.
For years, New Zealanders have envied their Australian cousins’ access to the iconic Swedish furniture giant. Flat-pack lovers have been relying on workarounds like third-party importers, cross-Tasman shopping trips, and resale sites to get their hands on IKEA’s minimalist designs.
Now the wait is over. IKEA has officially announced it will open its first New Zealand store at Sylvia Park, Auckland, on Thursday, 4 December 2025.
IKEA has confirmed that this first store will act as a test to evaluate performance before deciding on further stores across the country.
Until such a time, Aucklanders will enjoy the full in-person experience, while the rest of New Zealand can make use of online shopping, delivery, or regional collection points.
While the countdown is on, you might still be looking for affordable and stylish furniture in the meantime.
Luckily, you can still get IKEA in New Zealand through local importers. Just note that prices are often higher than direct IKEA retail because importers factor in shipping and handling. Some even have physical stores where you can browse.
