Ask a few Hamilton parents which secondary school is best, and you could get five different answers before Saturday sport is over. Everyone has their favourites, but choosing the right school for your own child is a whole different story.
After all, you're looking for more than good grades and a smart uniform. You want somewhere your child will find their feet, make lifelong friends, and actually look forward to going each morning. And when you find that perfect fit, it might even determine which side of the Waikato River you call home.
Whether you're a long-time Hamilton local or planning a move to the city, this guide takes you through some of the best secondary schools in Hamilton, helping you find the one where your child can truly thrive.
Hamilton’s relatively small population of 190,000 means that it has fewer private schools to choose from, compared to a major centre like Auckland, which has dozens of independent private colleges.
You may want to consider Hamilton’s state-integrated network as well. Like private schools, they are well resourced, charge fees and have smaller class sizes, but operate within the state system.
Many parents may look at the academic results of a school and stop there. But there is so much more that shapes your child’s secondary school experience. That’s why we’ve taken everything into consideration.
From NCEA results, national school rankings, and Crimson Education results to school culture, subject choice, extracurricular activities, pastoral care and pathways beyond school, and even reviews from past students and parents – here’s everything a parent will need to know to pick the best Hamilton secondary school for their child.

St Paul’s is consistently ranked in Crimson Education's top 50 schools. In 2026, it was ranked #42. In 2025, the school achieved a 97% NCEA Level 3 pass rate, and 55 students earned scholarships.
St Paul’s excellent academic reputation is undeniable, offering both NCEA and Cambridge pathways. This opens overseas opportunities post-secondary school.
The school’s exquisite 19-hectare campus may catch the eye of parents and students, but they are mainly drawn in by its great pastoral care and opportunities in sport, outdoor education and leadership. In 2026, the school became a fully integrated co-educational school at all year levels – a major advantage for many families.
School fees are high and begin at NZ$30,559 (before the school's full-payment discount). For boarding students, the cost per year sits at around NZ$47,617 before the discount.

Waikato Diocesan School is ranked #36 by Crimson Education. The school has a pass rate of 96.6% at NCEA Level 2 and above. This sits well above the Waikato average of 75%.
It’s not just results that have parents choosing the school. There’s a strong emphasis on academics, as well as sport, leadership, and personal development, providing an all-round education to your child.
Dio is Anglican and state-integrated. While they do charge fees, these are a lot lower than many private schools achieving similar results. Plus, your child can choose from a diverse curriculum that combines traditional academic subjects with religious studies, sports, the arts, and many extra-curricular options.
As a single-sex school, it won’t suit families looking for a co-ed option. Enrolment preference is also given to students of the Anglican faith.

The school has a strong academic record and is ranked #41 by Crimson Education. Students regularly achieve NCEA and University Entrance pass rates well above national levels. The school also offers a choice between NCEA and the International Baccalaureate (IB).
St Peter’s is located in the small town of Cambridge, 20 minutes away from Hamilton. It’s a popular option for Hamilton families looking for a private, co-ed school.
The school places a strong emphasis on academics, sport, arts, and leadership. It offers both day and boarding facilities on its large leafy campus.
The choice between NCEA and IB is a major drawcard for families who want international university pathways for their children.
The fees for secondary school start at NZ$28,070 annually. Another consideration is the commute. While only 20 minutes from Hamilton, the drive can be longer due to morning and afternoon traffic.

Sacred Heart Girls’ 2025 NCEA and University Entrance results were above the national average. 71.2% of students achieved UE, compared with 52.0% nationally.
The school also has a strong focus on academic achievement, sports, arts, leadership, faith, and service. The school regularly achieves above national averages for all three NCEA Levels and University Entrance.
As a Catholic school, religious teachings are a large part of its identity. Developing a strong culture of care sits at the heart of the school’s pastoral care. The school is on the smaller side, with a maximum roll of 925 students, allowing for a more intimate classroom environment where each child can get more specialised attention.
Preference is given to students who are affiliated with the Catholic faith. School fees are around NZ$2,000 per annum.

Hamilton Boys High School has a reputation that goes beyond the city. It’s known as one of the top 50 state schools in the country. Crimson Education ranks it at #50 for academic performance in 2026.
Hamilton Boys' High has a long-established history, with roots going all the way back to 1903. Grounded in a traditional boys’ school environment, it places a strong emphasis on academics and sports.
The school has a roll size of 2,300, which allows it to offer a wide range of subjects and sports. There are more than 40 different sports codes, including modern sports, like adventure racing and canoe polo, and traditional pursuits like rugby, chess, and rowing.
There is also a strong emphasis on integrating Māori culture, including Kapa haka, waka ama and cultural performance.
As a single-sex school, its structure won’t appeal to families wanting their sons and daughters at the same institute. The traditional boys school model and large roll size may not suit every boy either.

While Hamilton Girls’ High School doesn’t rank in Crimson Education’s top 50, it shouldn’t be overlooked. Its 2025 class still achieved NCEA and University Entrance results above the national average (94.9% and 50% respectively), even outperforming its brother school, Hamilton Boys’ High, in the latter. The 2025 class also included scholarship students in Biology, Chemistry, English, Drama, Media Studies, Technology, and Classical Studies.
The school has an emphasis on empowering young women. They offer an extensive number of co-curricular options in sport, music, cultural activities, and the arts. Leadership and pastoral care are also a focus.
The school puts a particular emphasis on individual achievement and academic progress. With 1,800 students, they’re able to offer a wide range of subjects and extracurricular activities that aren't necessarily available at smaller schools.
Like Hamilton Boys High, Hamilton Girls' is a large state single-sex school. Students who learn better in smaller classes or prefer a co-ed environment may prefer one of Hamilton's other options.

Although no longer on the list of top 50 schools, Crimson Education ranked Hillcrest High #41 nationally in 2024. Despite this drop in the rankings, this secondary school still has lots to offer Hamilton families.
Hillcrest is one of Hamilton's more established co-ed state schools. It offers a wide range of academic, art, cultural, and sporting subjects. While the school ranks highly for its academic achievements, there’s a wider focus on helping students find and play to their strengths.
The school offers programmes covering visual arts, drama, music, cultural groups, and sports. Hillside is one of the strongest options for families looking for an academic co-educational state school in Hamilton.
Hillcrest has a roll of around 1,800 students and is on the larger side. The school has a more conventional NCEA-focused pathway than other private or state-integrated schools.
